VIRTUALLY
CHRISTIAN: How Christ Changes Human Meaning and Makes
Creation New
Dr. Bartlett has achieved
in Virtually Christian a decidedly new approach
to understanding the meaning of the life and death of
Jesus for the world of the 21st century. He has
drawn on a wide variety of sources to support his thesis
that the game-changing role of Jesus for contemporary
(and all other) societies is that through his act of
forgiveness for his executioners as he was hanging on
the cross, he initiated an evolutionary change from the
ubiquitous culture of violence enveloping the world to a
movement towards equally ubiquitous non-violence.

Reading the Bible Again
for the First Time: Taking the Bible Seriously But
Not Literally
One of the vital challenges facing thoughtful people
today is how to read the Bible faithfully without
abandoning our sense of truth and history.
Reading the Bible Again for the
First Time provides a much-needed solution to
the problem of how to have a fully authentic yet
contemporary understanding of the scriptures. Many
mistakenly believe there are no choices other than
fundamentalism or simply rejecting the Bible as
something that can bring meaning to our lives. Answering
this modern dilemma, acclaimed author Marcus Borg
reveals how it is possible to reconcile the Bible with
both a scientific and critical way of thinking and our
deepest spiritual needs, leading to a contemporary yet
grounded experience of the sacred texts.

Jesus: A New Vision
From top Jesus expert Marcus
Borg, a completely updated and revised version of his
vision of Jesus—as charismatic healer, sage, and
prophet, a man living in the power of the spirit and
dedicated to radical social change. Fully revised
and updated, this is Borg's major book on the historical
Jesus. He shows how the Gospel portraits of Jesus,
historically seen, make sense. Borg takes into
account all the recent developments in historical Jesus
scholarship, as well as new theories on who Jesus was
and how the Gospels reflect that.
The original version of this book was published well
before popular fascination with the historical Jesus.
Now this new version takes advantage of all the research
that has gone on since the 80s. The revisions
establish it as Borg's big but popular book on Jesus.

The First Christmas: What
the Gospels Really Teach about Jesus's Birth
In The First Christmas, two
of today's top Jesus scholars, Marcus J. Borg and John
Dominic Crossan, join forces to show how history has
biased our reading of the nativity story as it appears
in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. As they did
for Easter in their previous book, The Last Week, here
they explore the beginning of the life of Christ,
peeling away the sentimentalism that has built up over
the last two thousand years around this most well known
of all stories to reveal the truth of what the gospels
actually say. Borg and Crossan help us to see this
well-known narrative afresh by answering the question,
What do these stories mean? in the context of both the
first century and the twenty-first century. They
successfully show that the Christmas story, read in its
original context, is far richer and more challenging
than people imagine.

Conflict, Holiness, and
Politics in the Teaching of Jesus
Originally published in
1984, this extraordinary work has until now been
available only in an expensive library edition.
The present edition has been completely updated and
redesigned, and includes an extended new introduction by
Marcus Borg that relates the book's central arguments to
subsequent Jesus scholarship. A foreword by N. T.
Wright characterizes the book as one of the foundational
works in the "third quest" for the historical Jesus.
In the book, Marcus Borg argues that conflict between a
politics of holiness and a politics of compassion, and
their implications for Israel, resides at the center of
Jesus' activity and teaching. He emphasizes
several features that have since become central to Jesus
scholarship: the importance of Jesus' inclusive meal
practice, a non-apocalyptic paradigm for understanding
Jesus, and Jesus as a social prophet and
boundary-breaker.

Seyyed Hossein Nasr, Joan Chittister, Laurence Kushner,
Desmond Tutu, and Marcus Borg explore the ways in which

JESUS: Uncovering the Life,
Teachings, and Relevance of a Religious Revolutionary
Borg returns to the
ground where he made his dramatic debut with
Jesus: A New Vision in 1987. Here Borg
updates his work introducing us to a Jesus we have never
met before. In many ways Borg's Jesus is more
revolutionary and possesses a more exciting moral vision
than the church's traditional view. Here we meet
Jesus as sage and prophet courageously and surprisingly
confronting the social crises of his day. After a
lifetime of work and study, Borg also discovers a Jesus
that can continue to inspire, inform and guide those who
have moved beyond archaic doctrines. Borg argues
that there is a movement in the church today that is
catching up with where scholarship has brought us in
understanding Christian origins. Here readers will
find an historically accurate Jesus, but one who is
still worth following.

JESUS at 2000
On February 9-10, 1996, six
internationally known Jesus scholars participated in the
first national symposium to commemorate the 2000th
anniversary of the birth of Jesus. Talking about
the historical, religious, and cultural significance of
Jesus, these scholars drew mass media attention and
inspired a phenomenally successful follow-up discussion

study of Jesus and Christian origins and to those

The Last Week: The
Day-By-Day Account of Jesus's Final Week in Jerusalem
Using the gospel of Mark as
their guide, Borg and Crossan present a day-by-day
account of Jesus' final week of life. They
begin their story on Palm Sunday with two triumphal
entries into Jerusalem. The first entry, that of
Roman governor Pontius Pilate leading Roman soldiers
into the city, symbolized military strength. The
second heralded a new kind of moral hero who was praised
by the people as he rode in on a humble donkey.
The Jesus introduced by Borg and Crossan is this new
moral hero, a more dangerous Jesus than the one
enshrined in the church's traditional teachings.

In Search of Paul
Crossan and Reed make a
compelling case for the idea that culture, politics and
quest for empire played as large a part in the formation
of the Apostle Paul as did theology and religious
training. It is an approach that will leave some
wondering just how much of a role spirituality played in
the Paul story. The authors (Crossan is a prolific
author and former co-chair of the Jesus Seminar, Reed is
Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at La
Verne College in California) dig deeply into the history
and archeology of Paul's world, searching for an
understanding of the enigmatic apostle. Paul
emerges as a fervent advocate for both the uniqueness of
the Christian faith and the marginalization of others,
the triumph of the City of God over the pagan and
anti-God Roman empire.

Who is
Jesus?
Eminent biblical scholar John Dominic
Crossan collaborates with Richard G. Watts to rediscover
the life, the work, and the message of Jesus. The
authors explain the person and teachings of Jesus with
remarkable clarity, relying on the actual historical
record as much as possible. Their intention is to aid
readers in a fuller and more accurate understanding of
the kind of man Jesus was, what kind of world he lived
in, and the legacy of his teachings to humankind.
Responding to questions about Jesus that he has been
asked from all over the world, Crossan addresses the
critical issues that have surrounded the Man from
Galilee for centuries: his miracles, his baptism, his
resurrection, and more. Crossan and Watts help us
understand the life and death of Jesus in a way that
goes far beyond the Gospels and the legend. This
book makes the results of a lifetime of scholarship
readily available to nonspecialists who want to meet the
historical Jesus. It also leads us to a greater
appreciation of Jesus' lasting impact on our lives.

The Birth
of Christianity In this national
bestseller, John Dominic Crossan, the world's leading
expert on the historical Jesus, reveals how Christianity
emerged in the period following Jesus' death.
Taking an interdisciplinary approach, Crossan shines new
light on the theological and cultural contexts from
which the Christian church arose. He argues
powerfully that Christianity would have happened with or
without Paul and contends that Jesus' "resurrection"
meant something vastly different for his early followers
than it does for many traditional Christians today--what
mattered was Christina origins finally illuminates the
mysterious period that set Western religious history in
its decisive course.

God and
Empire: Jesus Against Rome, Then and Now
At the heart of the Bible is a moral and
ethical call to fight unjust superpowers, whether they
are Babylon, Rome, or even America.
From the divine punishment and promise found in Genesis
through the revolutionary messages of Jesus and Paul,
John Dominic Crossan reveals what the Bible has to say
about land and economy, violence and retribution,
justice and peace, and, ultimately, redemption. In
contrast to the oppressive Roman military occupation of
the first century, he examines the meaning of the
non-violent Kingdom of God prophesized by Jesus and the
equality advocated by Paul to the early Christian
churches. Crossan contrasts these messages of
peace with the misinterpreted apocalyptic vision from
the Book of Revelation, which has been misrepresented by
modern right-wing theologians and televangelists to
justify U.S. military actions in the Middle East.

American Theocracy: The
Peril and Politics of Radical Religion, Oil, and
Borrowed Money in the 21st Century
From America's premier political analyst, an explosive
examination of the axis of religion, politics, and
borrowed money that threatens to destroy the nation.
From Ancient Rome to the British Empire, Phillips
demonstrates that every world-dominating power has been
brought down by a related set of causes: a lethal
combination of global over-reach, militant religion,
resource problems, and ballooning debt. It is this
same axis of ills that has come to define America's
political and economic identity in the past decade.
Military miscalculations in the Middle East, the surge
of fundamentalist religion, the staggering national
debt, the costs of U.S. oil dependence — together these
factors are undermining our nation's security, solvency,
and standing in the world. If left unchecked, the
same forces will bring a debt-bloated, preachy,
energy-starved America to its knees.

The Surprising Purpose of
Anger: Beyond Anger Management: Finding the Gift
You can feel it when
it hits you. Your face flushes and your vision narrows.
Your heartbeat increases as judgmental thoughts flood
your mind. Your anger has been triggered, and you're
about to say or do something that will likely make it
worse. You have an alternative. By practicing the
Nonviolent Communication NVC process you can use that
anger to serve a specific, life-enriching purpose. It
tells you that you're disconnected from what you value
and that your needs are not being met. Rather than
managing your anger by suppressing your feelings or
blasting someone with your judgments, Marshall Rosenberg
shows you how to use anger to discover what you need,
and then how to meet your needs in constructive ways.
This booklet will help you apply these four key truths:
- People or events may spark your anger but your own
judgments are its cause - Judging others as "wrong"
prevents you from connecting with your unmet needs -
Getting clear about your needs helps you identify
solutions satisfying to everyone - Creating strategies
focused on meeting your needs transforms anger into
positive actions.

Das Können Wir Klären!
Immer mehr Streitigkeiten
enden vor Gericht - auch in der Wirtschaft.
Wirtschaftsmediation als Alternative zur gerichtlichen
Konfliktlösung ist von daher im Trend. I n keinem der

Was Deine Wut Dir Sagen
Will: überraschende Einsichten

Living in Sin?: A Bishop
Rethinks Human Sexuality
Is celibacy the only moral
alternative to marriage? Should the widowed be allowed
to form intimate relationships without remarrying?
Should the church receive homosexuals into its community
and support committed gay and lesbian relationships?
Should congregations publicly and liturgically witness
and affirm divorces? Should the church's moral standards
continue to be set by patriarchal males? Should women be
consecrated bishops? Bishop Spong proposes a pastoral
response based on scripture and history to the changing
realities of the modern world. He calls for a moral
vision to empower the church with inclusive teaching
about equal, loving, non-exploitative relationships.

A New Christianity for a New
World: Why Traditional Faith is Dying and How a New
Faith is Being Born
It offers an
understanding of Christianity that is free of
exclusivity and shame. Bishop Spong empowers those who
are disillusioned by religion to discover a God who is
the source of life and the source of love, unbounded by
the limits of any tradition. The Church of tomorrow, lie
writes, must be able to "incorporate all of our reality.
It must be able to allow God and Satan to come together
in each of us . . . . It must unite Christ with
Antichrist, Jesus with Judas, male with female,
heterosexual with homosexual."
After explaining why the traditional understandings of
God, Christ, and the rules and dogmas of the Church are
not just inoperative but dangerous, Spong offers his
contemporary vision of the Church as a community of
love, equality, and truth. This work is the ultimate
legacy of his struggle to discover and promote a faith
system that can live in our new world. Only someone who
has spent a lifetime crusading for change and the rights
of outcasts in the Church could give voice to such a
reasoned, just, and loving faith. With Bishop Spong we
can take the brave step to discover the Christianity of
tomorrow.

The Sins of Scripture:
Exposing the Bible's Texts of Hate to Reveal the God of
Love
In the history of the
Western World, the Bible has been a perpetual source of
inspiration and guidance for countless Christians.
However, this Bible has also left a trail of pain. It is
undeniable that the Bible is not always used for good.
Sometimes the Bible can seem overtly evil. Sometimes its
texts are terrible.
Bishop John Shelby Spong
boldly approaches those texts that have been used
through history to justify the denigration or
persecution of others while carrying with them the
implied and imposed authority of the claim that they
were the Word of God. As he exposes and challenges what
he calls the terrible texts of the Bible, laying bare
the evil done by these texts in the name of God, he also
seeks to redeem these texts, hoping to recover their
ultimate depth and purpose.

Die Sünden Der Heiligen
Schrift
Spong

Jesus for the Non-ReligiousJesus
for the Non-Religious
Writing from his
prison cell in Nazi Germany in 1945 Dietrich Bonhoeffer,
a young German theologian, sketched a vision of what he
called "religionless Christianity." In this book, John
Shelby Spong puts flesh onto the bare bones of
Bonhoeffer's radical thought. The result is a strikingly
new and different portrait of Jesus of Nazareth—a Jesus
for the non-religious.
Spong challenges much of the traditional understanding
that has for so long surrounded the Jesus of history,
from the tale of his miraculous birth to a virgin, to
the account of his cosmic ascension into the sky at the
end of his life. Spong questions the historicity of the
ideas that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, that he had
twelve disciples, and that the miracle stories were
meant to be descriptions of supernatural events. He also
speaks directly to those contemporary critics of
Christianity who call God a "delusion" and who write
letters to a "Christian nation" and describe how
Christianity has become evil and destructive.

Liberating the Gospels:
Reading the Bible with Jewish Eyes
In this boldest book since
Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism, Bishop John
Shelby Spong offers a compelling view of the Gospels as
thoroughly Jewish tests. Spong powerfully argues
that many of the key Gospel accounts of events in the
life of Jesus—from the stories of his birth to his
physical resurrection—are not literally true. He
offers convincing evidence that the Gospels are a
collection of Jewish midrashic stories written to convey
the significance of Jesus. This remarkable
discovery brings us closer to how Jesus was really
understood in his day and should be in ours.

Rescuing the Bible from
Fundamentalism: A Bishop Rethinks the Meaning of
Scripture
BibleSex drove me to
the Bible! This statement is literally true, but not in
the sense that most would interpret it. In 1988 my
book entitled Living in Sin? "A Bishop Rethinks Human
Sexuality was published by Harper and Row. In that
book I was led to question traditional religious
attitudes and traditional religious definitions on a
wide variety of sexual issues, from homosexuality to
premarital living arrangements. There was an
immediate outcry from conservative religious circles in
defense of something they called biblical morality.
"Proof Texting and Prejudice This appeal to the Bible to
justify and to sustain an attitude that was clearly
passing away had a very familiar ring to me. I
grew up in America's segregated South with its rich
evangelical biblical heritage. Time after time I
heard the Bible quoted to justify segregation. I
was told that Ham, Noah's son, had looked on Noah in his
nakedness, and for this sin he had been cursed to
servitude and slavery along with all his progeny (Gen.
9:25-27). It did not occur to those quoting this
Scripture to raise questions about what kind of God was
assumed in this verse, or whether or not they could
worship such a God. Since they could not identify
themselves with those who were the victims of this
cruelty, the God to whom they ascribed this victimizing
power did not appear to them to be seriously
compromised.

Resurrection: A Bishop
Rethinks the Meaning of Easter
A daring examination of the
foundational event of Christianity, and an inspiring
vision for reconciliation between Jews and Christians
from the bestselling author and widely respected Bishop
John Shelby Spong.
Using approaches from the Hebrew interpretive tradition
to discern the actual events surrounding Jesus' death,
Bishop Spong questions the historical validity of
literal narrative concerned the Resurrection. He
asserts that the resurrection story was born in an
experience that opened the disciples' eyes to the
reality of God and the meaning of Jesus of Nazareth.
Spong traces the Christian origins of anti-Semitism to
the Church's fabrication of the ultimate Jewish
scapegoat, Judas Iscariot. He affirms the
inclusiveness of the Christian message and emphasizes
the necessity of mutual integrity and respect among
Christians and Jews.

Warum Der Alte Glaube Neu
Geboren Werden Muss
Gott kann nicht mehr
glaubwürdig als ein Wesen mit übernatürlicher Macht
verstanden werden, das in die menschliche Geschichte
eingreift.
verwendet. Schließlich beschreibt er seine Vision der
Kirche und ihrer Liturgie für die Zukunft. Kann das
Christentum seine notwendige Reformation überleben? Kann
es einen neuen Wortschatz für die Glaubenstradition
entwickeln? Kann es in einer nachchristlichen Welt mehr
als eine Randgruppe sein?
